Silent Girls: The Hidden Stories of Afghanistan

In a partnership between Precipice Theater Team and Our Culture is Giving, Silent Girls: The Hidden Stories of Afghanistan is an animated short film created with the words and stories of Afghan girls and women who have survived assault and systemic violence under Taliban rule. To escape further harm, these survivors live in hiding, residing in safe houses in Afghanistan, provided by Our Culture is Giving (OCIG), where they receive medical care, groceries, and education. During clandestine weekly visits, OCIG’s support team facilitates their participation in this groundbreaking project.

Through writing prompts, interviews, and art projects conducted during these visits, participants share their experiences, dreams, and memories of life before a devastating shift in power left them vulnerable. As members of ethnic minority groups with ties to the U.S. government, these girls and women face constant peril. Their stories, translated and delivered by intermediaries, are woven into a powerful narrative brought to life through animation by PTT’s Director of Visual Arts, Chloe Lanyi-Lari.

Silent Girls offers an intimate glimpse into a hidden community, posing vital questions about compassion, humanity, and power. This project stands as a testament to the courage of those who refuse to be silenced and the transformative power of storytelling.
